Sponsored by the Lillie Carroll Jackson Civil Rights Museum, an offsite unit of Morgan State University, this symposium will include a keynote address and a panel discussion by leading scholars. The panel will be moderated by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist E.R. Shipp. A book signing will follow in the James E. Lewis Museum of Art.
About the Keynote Speaker
Dr. Karsonya “Kaye” Wise Whitehead is the host of “Today with Dr. Kaye” on WEAA radio. She is an author and documentary filmmaker who is known as the #blackmommyactivist. She is Associate Professor of Communication and African and African American Studies at Loyola University Maryland. She received the Collegium Visionary Award from the College of Holy Cross; the Exceptional Merit in Media Award (EMMA) from the National Women’s Political Caucus for #BlackGirlActivism: Exploring the Ways We Come Though the Storm, a special issue of the Meridians: feminism, race, transnationalism journal (Duke University Press); the Baltimore Sun named her as one of Baltimore’s 25 “Women to Watch in 2019” and, Essence magazine included her on the 2019 “Woke 100 List” of “black women advocating for change.”
About the Panel
Professor E.R. Shipp is a Pulitzer Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist-scholar with advanced degrees from Columbia University. She is a founding faculty member of the School of Global Journalism and Communication at Morgan State University. Dr. Sylvea Hollis focuses on the work started by the late Dr. Rosalyn Terborg-Penn, pioneering scholar on the contributions of Black women in the suffrage movement. Dr. Hollis is a National Park Service (NPS) Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow. Dr. Ida Jones is that author of Baltimore Civil Rights Leader Victorine Q. Adams: The Power of the Ballot. She is also the University Archivist at Morgan State University. Dr. Alison M. Parker's current book project is a biography of the civil rights activist and suffragist Mary Church Terrell, Unceasing Militant: The Life of Mary Church Terrell, forthcoming with the University of North Carolina Press. Dr. Parker is the Chair and Professor of History at the University of Delaware.
